How did it all start
The Javelina Chase Cycling Event is an annual event that draws competitive and non-competitive cyclists to the small Southeastern Arizona town of Duncan, AZ (population 800). Overseen by a volunteer committee and guided by USA Cycling the Javelina Chase has grown in each of its 3 years from 24 participants in 2014 to over 200 in 2016. In addition to competitive timed races, the event offers a Bike Rodeo for 100-plus area youth and parents. The Bike Rodeo provides instruction about bike safety and maintenance and distributes a limited number of free helmets to the youths.
A family 5K Walk/Run is also offered to promote family fun opportunities and healthy lifestyles. The event brings high-profile health and fitness to Greenlee County. It is also an opportunity for area kids to witness the benefits of health and fitness firsthand as they watch athletes competing and can mingle and speak with them about competition and sport. The racing event covers 2 days and starts on a Saturday morning in the spring with races of 72, 50, and 25 miles in addition to Off-road mountain bike rides and a Criterium on Sunday.
“The Chase” has garnered energetic support due to its adventurous spirit and its support of college scholarships for local students as well as other social services such as the DARE program, Mt. Graham Safe House(Greenlee Chapter), Duncan Women's Club, and Greenlee County Search & Rescue among others .
The goal of the Javelina Chase is to bring an exciting cycling event to Duncan and Greenlee County which enhances cycling and its associated health, fun and environmental benefits and to provide funds for a scholarship for two graduating Greenlee County seniors.
